Eindhoven Airport offers passengers the possibility of CO2 compensation

Climate Neutral Group and Eindhoven Airport join forces
Eindhoven Airport offers passengers the possibility of CO2 compensation
Publ. date 10 Mar 2008
The flight industry shows a growing awareness of its responsibilities concerning climate change. Producers of airplanes are working, although not exclusively for this reason, hard to reduce fuel consumption of their aircraft and airlines are also starting to take action. But in the foreseeable future the emission of greenhouse gases such as CO2, NOx, methane and ozone through air traffic will play an inevitable and growing role in global warming. Viable technologies which avoid emissions are not widely available yet. It is however possible to neutralise the climatic effects of flying.

The neutralisation process takes place by compensating the emitted greenhouse gases, calculated per seat and expressed in CO2-equivalents. In this way an equal amount of CO2 will be absorbed or the emission thereof avoided, elsewhere. Currently the airlines are attracting a lot of media attention through the presentation of their solutions for voluntary compensation by passengers. But one of the true European pioneers in this arena is an airport: Eindhoven Airport in The Netherlands.

Since April 2007 it is possible for passengers to compensate the climate effects of their trips in an easy way. Using touch-screen terminals the emissions of a flight to any of the near 25 destinations, within direct reach from this airport, can be calculated. And through leaving name and mail address and payment by credit card, the transaction can be concluded in just a few minutes. Thus, the passenger takes responsibility for the climate effect of his or her flight and digitally receives a certificate as proof thereof. The execution of the compensation lies in the hands of the Benelux market leader in this field, Climate Neutral Group. GreenSeat, with solutions which are specifically aimed at flight compensation and with a noticeable presence in the travel market, is part of this organisation.

Next to offering this, for the European market unique service under the name ‘Flying Naturally’, it goes to say that Eindhoven Airport also takes it own responsibility as an organisation. Further to an innovative environmental policy, all unavoidable emissions, caused by the airports’ operations are compensated.
